Appointment of New Principal

Appointment of New Principal17th April 2019

We are delighted to announce that Stuart Nicholson has been appointed Principal of Bishopstrow College, effective July 22, 2019.

Stuart brings with him a wealth of international education experience, spanning both traditional boarding schools and more recently, international colleges.  He started his teaching career as a Teacher of Physics at West Buckland School in 1988, before moving to Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh in 1991 and then Culford School, where he was a Housemaster, Teacher of Physics and Teacher of Business Studies from 1996 to 2006.  From 2006 to 2009, Stuart was Headmaster of Edgehill College/Kingsley School in Bideford, Devon, before moving to Cambridge, where he was Principal of Cambridge Centre for Sixth Form Studies (‘CCSS’) from 2009 to 2018.  At CCSS, Stuart managed the transition to CCSS being part of a larger group, the Stephen Perse Foundation.

In addition to these roles, Stuart was Chairman of the Independent Schools Association from 2016 to 2017 and Chairman of the Council for Independent Education from 2014 to 2016.  He is a Trustee of the Association for the Education and Guardianship of International Students (AEGIS).  Stuart has exceptional administrative skills, and is a strong team builder and inspirational leader.  He is the father of Oliver (aged 24), and has been married to Deborah for 29 years.

We are also delighted to announce that Lorraine Atkins, the current Principal at Bishopstrow, has been appointed Principal of Padworth College, Bishopstrow’s sister school, effective September 2019.  We would also like to take this opportunity to recognise and thank Lorraine, who has been Principal since September 2015.  During her time at Bishopstrow, the College has secured an improved rating from the British Council under the Accreditation UK Scheme, with the College now the highest ranked boarding school in the UK under this Scheme.  The College has also become a member of the Independent Schools Association and Boarding Schools Association, successfully completed inspections by OFSTED and ISI and grown enrolments, following the opening of two new boarding houses and the launch of new programmes, most notably, the Academic Summer Programme.  Lorraine has also developed her existing network of contacts and acquaintances across UK independent schools and agents around the world and looks forward to developing these relationships further at Padworth.

Stuart will have some time with Lorraine before and during July to ensure an effective and smooth transition.

We look forward to welcoming Stuart to Bishopstrow in the coming months and to continuing to work alongside Lorraine at Padworth.
